Natural Pain Relief: Yoga Poses To Relieve Pain

Body pain is a natural part of life that occurs to everyone. According to the National Health Interview Survey, more than 40 million people in the US suffer from severe body pains. Whether it is chronic back pains, healing after an accident, or physical discomfort due to the daily activities and duties, the pain could bring impact on anyone’s life and affect their usual way of living. Fortunately, there are some natural ways that can help relieve pain, among them, yoga.

Yoga is a physical body exercise that allows stretching of body muscles and keeps them fit and enhances relaxation. Even doctors recommend yoga not just to treat back pain, but also stress and anxiety. There are yoga poses to relieve pain. Practicing them for a few minutes regularly can benefit the body by helping it relax and strengthen it.

Yoga Poses To Relieve Pain For Inflammation

Relieving inflammation requires more deep relaxation than stretching. It should involve the nervous system and allow the body to rest and heal.

Reclining Bound Angle

Reclining bound angle involves lying on the ground while bending the knees and keeping the feet flat. The rib cage stays on the bolster and the head on a blanket. The soles of the feet stay together while the knees fall on the sides.

A pillow could help provide support.

The arms are also left to rest by sides with the palms staying up. For complete relaxation, staying in this pose for three to five minutes is advisable.

Just like the name, the patient sits on their heels, spreading the knees slightly wider with big toes coming in contact with each other. A stack of pillows is placed in front with the desired height for support.

The patient then leans forward and rests their torso on padding and keeping their arms on the sides, relaxing for up to 5 minutes in this position.

Yoga Poses For Knee Pain

For knee pains, yoga poses that help to stretch the muscles on the outer side of the thigh are very much effective in relieving pain. Targeting muscles around the kneecap can also be as effective.

Twisted Figure Four

The patient lies on his back, bending the knees and feet on the ground. The ankle is then placed on the left knee, allowing both legs to move to the left. The sole of the right foot is left to rest on the ground while its knee is pointing away from the head.

This makes the pelvis hang towards the floor, thereby relaxing the lower back, allowing the outer thigh to stretch. This is done for both sides.

Warrior II

In warrior II pose, the feet are placed about five feet apart, with the right foot forward and the left foot bending slightly inwards. The right knee is bent over the ankle, while the arms stretch apart. The same is repeated on the other side for sixty seconds each.

Tight hips are the major causes of back pains. Yoga poses that help release the tightness are effective in relieving back pains.

Half Happy Baby

This pose involves lying while facing up and drawing the knee to the chest. The hands grab the sole of the foot and help to drive the knee towards the chest. While in this position, the lower back is let to relax for a minute, and the same is done for the other side.

Supine Twist

In the supine twist, one lies on his back and pulls the knees to his chest. Both legs are then shifted to one side with one on top of the other, resting on the floor. The patient then stays in this position for up to two minutes and then repeats this for the other side.

One lies facing up bending their knees. The right ankle is then moved to the left knee and legs pulled towards the chest while holding the shin. The person must ensure the head is resting on the ground and tries as much as possible to rest the hips on the floor too. The same is repeated for the other side for at least two minutes.

Reclined Cow Face

While lying on the back, the knees are bent while the feet remain flat on the ground. Both legs are then raised from the floor and crisscrossed over each other while holding shins or knees. This is to ensure the outer thighs are fully stretched. This step is repeated by switching legs after one minute.

Cow Face

Using a strap, let the right-hand hang it overhead, allowing the left hand to grab it at the back from the bottom side. The strap is then used to pull the hand that is at the bottom until a gentle stretch is felt. This process is done for both hands for a minute each.

It’s common to have headaches or pain in the neck due to different activities of the day such as sitting on a computer, carrying a heavy load, or sitting in a wrong and uncomfortable posture. Some headaches are related to muscle tension. These poses can be effective in relieving the pain.

Restorative Chest

One vertically lies on a 3-5 inch diameter mat, with the spine and head above the mat. The body is let heavy on the roll and eyes closed for total relaxation. One rests for up to five minutes in this position releasing tension on the chest.

Legs up the wall

Here, both legs are placed against the wall while lying on the back. One then puts a towel under their pelvis and finds the best relaxation position while the legs are still against the wall. Relaxing in this position for five minutes will help relieve headache and neck pain.
